'This book is one of the most enjoyable sci-fi books I've read in many years, and I've been reading sci-fi for over 50 years.' ( UK)

'Engaging story rooted in plausible science. Believable characters and situations' ( US)

'Both a spy story, a sci-fi masterpiece as well as a thriller full of suspense and intrigue, the story rockets on ever forward with twists and turns.' ( UK)

'This read like the golden age stuff I treasured as a youth, Arthur C. Clarke and co. have a worthy heir in Sedgwick. As much a spy adventure as a space caper, this story has plot and intrigue, and gripped me like nothing else in ages. I tore through it in very short time, and plan to re-read before long.' ( UK)

NOTE This is the first of a two book series

Description

Six years after its launch in 2050, Dr Aidan Lemaie makes a stunning discovery with the Helios space telescope array. The Helios array has, for the first time, made the surface features of exoplanets visible to human eyes. Green forests, mountain ranges and blue oceans all seem to be visible on Avendano-185f, ‘only’ fifteen light-years away. The find is hailed as the saviour of a languishing Earth, locked in the same old cycle of war, poverty and overpopulation that it always has been. But the potential second-Earth would take at least 150 years to reach using the best conventional propulsion methods. Then another 15 years for any message of what is found to reach Earth.

Only recently has the Western Global Alliance unveiled the experimental technology that might bridge the fifteen light-year distance across interstellar space. The Faster-Than-Light drive is a revolutionary technology with origins steeped in mystery - it seems at least half a century ahead of its time. Although experimental and imperfect, the technology is of unparalleled strategic value and Russian spymaster, Sergei Bekov, will stop at nothing to acquire it. His beautiful, deep cover agent, Dasha Morozova, has infiltrated the lives of the people heading the project. Will her attempts to mercilessly betray them succeed and further her repressive regime’s cause?

Meanwhile Yau Min, an eccentric former-SETI scientist, struggles for recognition. He wonders why the transmissions, that he thinks came from the Avendano system, went on for many years then mysteriously fell silent. What caused the signals and what made them stop?

Should humanity set off for the promise of a new world, to provide a fresh start for the people of a crowded, ravished Earth? Is it a pristine second-Earth or a post-apocalyptic nightmare? Is there an intelligent civilization or will humankind become the apex species unopposed? The new space race is on and the rewards in land and resources could be huge - but so could be the risks. Astrobiologist, Professor Ken Hawkins, senses a trap that could doom humankind - but the human desire to explore is irresistible.

How will the actions of Captain Chris Buick and his Special Space Service squad change the course of history forever? With their motto Fortitude in Stellis - ‘Bravery Among the Stars’ have they got what it takes to protect all they have ever known and loved on Earth?

Immerse yourself in a future world of discovery, espionage and struggle in this stimulating epic tale. As the intelligent, interwoven plot unfolds to reveal the shocking truth about humanity’s future, you will find yourself hooked until its thrilling conclusion.

The First Exoplanet eBook TJ Sedgwick

Engaging story rooted in plausible science. Believable characters and situations, up to and including foolish, ham-handed espionage and special tactics gone irretrievably wrong. There's a lot of substance here, especially in the areas of extreme physics, alien biology and tech. Most of the people that inhabit the story are smart, competent and quickly grasp what's going on around them -- as you'd expect experts in their respective fields to me. There are some exceptions among the politicians, military and intelligence chiefs -- whose main flaw seems to be in not recognizing their own cataclysmic failure. I'm not usually a fan of story lines heavy with political intrigue, but it was a good fit here (and provided at least one parasitic character who I'm looking forward to seeing get his due in the sequel). Some others have expressed frustration over the typos and possible inconsistencies in this $2.99 book, but I'd remind them that this is a beginning indie author who currently doesn't have the luxury of a professional editor to assist him with proofreading.

The First Exoplanet eBook TJ Sedgwick Reviews

I don't make a practice of 5star awards, the exception in the case of this two book series is well and truly earned. A not-often-enough explored concept, characters you care for in spite of their many foibles, and well constructed writing. I will be eagerly anticipating Mr Ingrams next offerings!
The First Exoplanet is engaging and extremely well written. Sedgwick has given us a large read that at no time suffers from a weak plot or subplots. It remains interesting throughout the book and the characters are richly developed and never seem like just like "paper people." I really enjoyed reading this engaging sci-fi thriller and I recommend it without hesitation.
NO indication that this book was to be the first in a series! So, I started getting worried when I got 80% through the book and saw no end to conflict resolution on the horizon. How can one write a favorable book review for something unfinished? What a waste of time; never mind how good the prose is! And worse yet; the most prominent technology in the book is a literal Deus ex Machina--literally mankind discovered it but had no idea how it worked? Please, Mr. Sedgwick; be upfront with your readers and exercise your mind completely if you want to successfully continue your career. You have promise, but my faith is now shaken.
Good story but hardly technically possible in such a near future. He should have set the timeline to 2116. Also our technically inferior scientist build a small warship that is able to knock out 9 of their ships and also come up with cloaking devices. Too far fetched.
Good read overall. Interesting plot line. The aliens however are left a bit one dimensional and need a lot more development. The plot leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

I'd like to see less of the stereotypical one dimensional aliens and enemies within, and see better development of characters.

I prefer books that wrap up their current plot line rather than leave most questions unanswered at the end of the novel.
This does seem to be the new trend in online books though.
Since this is the first book of a two book series, I did my review of them at the end of the series (April 16, 2017). In short, this author is not one of the "masters", but he has promise. The story is a nice mix of military space adventure, political intrigue and hard science fiction all wrapped up in one. It also uses personal back-stories to personify the characters (though some too short lived). The pace is a bit uneven, but all in all, both books were enjoyable enough. I will read more of Sedgwicks works.
I liked this novel a lot. Essentially, this novel takes present-day exo-planet detection technology and projects it out about 75 years or so. Mankind is able to detect and locate an exo-planet in the so-called "Goldilocks zone" of a distant star, which exo-planet shows signs of vegetation, oxygen, and possibly even civilization. Mankind has recently discovered and developed faster-than-light ("FTL") space travel, and sends a probe to the exo-planet. An alien civilization is present, and the fun begins.

There is a lot to like in this story. The storyline moves along smartly and it held my interest (not always easy to do.) I did have some quibbles. The FTL is not well thought-out in my opinion, has inconsistencies as to what it can do, and I found the author's notion of FTL to be implausible. Each reader can decide for him or her self.

Overall I really liked this one and I moved quickly to the second and final novel in the series. RJB.
