Anti-Catholicism has been called America's "last acceptable prejudice". Why is this? Some of it is our own doing. But mostly it is due to the inability of regular "cradle Catholics" like me to give a reasonable explanation of why we are Catholic. Well, here's mine.
Why I'm Catholic edition by Tim Rohr Religion Spirituality eBooks
This is short, direct apologia for one man's adherence to Catholicism. The text is not scholarly. It does not cite academic or historical texts. It does not make deep or philosophical arguments. It is what it appears to be - the author's exploration for why he remains a Catholic and why he thinks his children should stay Catholic. The author starts with the proposition that we will all die,and goes from their to simply sketch out the choices that a person has to make, e.g., Is there a God or not? Who is God? Once we get to Christ as unique in the sense of being the one person who made the unique claim of self-divinity, then we have to start taking what Christ said very seriously, and one of those things is "This is my Body."I liked it for its directness. At the end of the day, after all the evidence is assessed and all the logical arguments are parsed, a person has to make a decision. As the author points out, it is an important decision, and not making a decision is a decision.
Ultimately, I agree with the author that I am a Catholic because I have no choice not to be. "To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life," was what St. Peter said, and it is the theme of the author's argument. He concludes:
//And so for me, there is no place else to go . That may not sound very convincing to you. I should have a million positive reasons to be Christian and Catholic. I do. But in the end, when the pain of life breaks your understanding, what worked for Peter works for me. There is no place else to go. And so I will do as he said. I will eat his flesh and drink his blood until -- as we proclaim.//

Certainly, there are many, many things that an internet atheist could attack and deconstruct. An internet atheist would rightly point out that nothing the author proposes constitutes "evidence" in a scientific or empirical sense. I suspect that the author would properly view that kind of strategy as pettifogging that doesn't come to grips with the real issues of human existence.
This is not a book for someone seeking good apologetics, but it is a good book for anyone who needs a shot in the arm if they are feeling a bit beat down by doubt.
